image: instructions for how to fold a zine from a sheet of paper, by Ashley Topacio

Zines are small, self-published, small-circulation ‘magazines.’ I say it zeen like the last bit of ‘magazine.’ They’re usually just pieced together with scissors and glue on A4 papers folded in half. There are an infinite number of ways to make them! Some of the most beautiful things I've read in my life were whispered to me in zines. I made my first when I was 20 with stolen office supplies. Eight years later, I co-founded a radical zine distro to raise funds for vulnerable trans women in Malaysia. I did it because I wanted to connect acts of solidarity to sharing stories like secrets. I'm motivated by glimpses of experiences flowing outside of the mainstream— how when surfaced, they can help us build power, love each other better, and feel less alone.

ZINES I LIKE

  • The past didn't go anywhere | an educational pamphlet from 2007 about anti-semitism in left movements from an anti-Islamophobia and pro-Palestine perspective
Learning Good Consent: An essential zine on relational boundaries
In this zine, sex is not nearly as important as the dirty work: defining the boundaries of what feels safe for your dignity around another while being mindful of their limits too.
Anarchy & Alcohol: What if you’re too drunk to dream?
Anarchy and Alcohol is the kind of zine where you immediately think of friends who need to read it, but you probably need to read it too.

MAKE YOUR OWN

Anyone can and should make a zine ✂️
